Simplicity and colors

In my work I enjoy creating simple shapes and large bold surfaces, showcasing the graphical aesthetic of traditional printing, and colors of course - I love colors!

Behind the art

Hi there

I'm Fannie. Everything found on this page is made entirely by me, from idea to finished print. I am running my small design studio from my apartment and from a shared workspace in Aarhus, Denmark.

Lino block printing is my personal space to create something beautiful and non-digital. What I love about it is the genuineness of creating something physical.

The craft of block printing

On this page I am sharing my process of block printing. The steps described here are the ones that each artwork has gone through before they were finished and frame-ready creations!

Step 1

Designing

Before the actual work can begin, you need an idea for a print. For me, this starts with coffee and crayon - as my designs are simple in style I like to do my sketching this bold.

Step 2

Cutting... A lot!

Transferring my designs to the linoblock is a pretty tedious process that involves tracing each line of the finished drawing to a piece of paper, turning it around and then tracing again.

When the drawing is visible on the block, the fun begins. Cutting away, slowly revealing the pattern that is to be the artwork. If the design is to have multiple colors, this is also the part where I remove the pieces that will hold the secondary colors.

Step 3

Printing

This part always starts with ink. It has be blended to achieve the desired colors and then rolled on the blocks with brayers. The ink companies must love me, I do so many large scale prints that I often run out!

When the ink is nice (added evenly and in the right amount) paper is carefully placed on the block - ensuring that the print is right in the middle. Pressure is applied, either by hand or with a traditional etching press doing the heavy lifting for me - which I have found is simply a must when I do 50x70cm artwork.
